Dancing with the Stars--NOT

Posted by Joan Francis in Tia Carrera , music , Maksim Chmerkovskiy , Len Goodman , Dancing with the Stars

I realize it will make no difference to ABC but I must protest what they have done to Dancing with the Stars and explain why I no longer watch it.

The first time we tuned in was the night that Tia Carrera and Maksim danced the Tango in season two. I was thrilled to see such a dramatic, romantic, well choreographed dance done to a perfect piece of music. I was so happy to see a return to real ballroom dancing. I replayed that dance three times that night.

For a couple of years I watched and enjoyed but for me the show lost the two things that were essential to my enjoyment: good music and good ballroom dance.

The dances are no longer real ballroom dancing. They are production numbers for a stage show where the dancers toss each other around rather than dance.

Good dance music has been abandoned. You can not say you're are doing a Viennese Waltz when you are playing rock or country music. For a real Viennese Waltz you must have Strauss. Likewise it is ridiculous to do any of the Latin dances to rock or other current pop. Etc. Etc. Len Goodman said it on the show. "To have great dance, you must have great music." I dearly wish you would try it next year.
